Penguin Collector 96

“Penguin Collector 96” is in the post.

A truck driver whose home is in a village 150km south of Krakow (though he's working in Coventry now, and this consignment came only from Exeter) delivered the palletload to my door.

A man who works in the nearby secondhand bookseller's shop passed by very soon after, so he, rather than any other member of the PCS, was the first to see the new issue, with its cover artwork by Maurice Spira.

The contents are, in my view, just as good, ranging from Anna Richardson on John Lehmann and Terry Taylor on James Thurber to Tim Graham on the late 1940s “Penguins Progress” and Andrew Malin on the early 1950s cloth-bound Penguins. I hope that you enjoy reading them, and look forward to learning of your reaction “ and to this issue inspiring a new flood of articles and images for the next.

James Mackay”
