Jerry Cinamon

Jerry Cinamon worked for Penguin, freelance, from 1961 on cover designs. From 1965-67 he designed the integrated texts and illustrations of several Pelican series including Style and Civilization, The Architect and Society and the paperback volumes of the Pelican History of Art.

From 1972-79 he was head of design for Allen Lane the Penguin Press where his work included the Art in Context series. He became Penguin’s chief designer in 1979, notably producing the Penguin New Art series.

He stopped working for Penguin in 1985, and in 1987 edited the memorial Monotype Recorder volume on Hans Schmoller. He produced a heavily-illustrated memoir of his work, Graphic Design, in 2013.

Phil Baines was a Professor of Typography at Central Saint Martins and author of Penguin by Design (2005) and Puffin by Design (2010). He co-ordinated speakers at the 2005 and 2007 PCS Study Days, co-dited Penguin By Designers and wrote the introduction of Penguin by Illustrators. His article in Collector 71 and his lecture to the 2009 PCS AGM both covered the evolution of Pelican covers. He designed covers for the Great Ideas series.
