This is a facsimile reproduction of the April 1987 special issue of The Monotype Recorder designed by Gerald Cinamon, which appeared following Hans's death in September 1985.
The publication is lavishly illustrated with samples of Hans's work and contains appreciations by many of his colleagues at Penguin including Oliver Caldecott, John Curtis, Dieter Pevsner and Kaye Webb. There are articles by Jerry Cinamon, John Trevitt, Jonathan Gili and Nicolas Barker.
The letter which accompanied the original issue described Schmoller as ‘one of the most influential typographers of this century. His work for Penguin Books for some thirty years has left a legacy that is still being drawn on by many typographers today.’
This reissue marks the centenary of the birth of Hans Schmoller on 9 April 1916.
