Life after the Annual Meeting and some Interesting Links

Enid Stephenson provided us with ideal conditions for our get together in Aldeburgh and it was wonderful to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. Adrian King will be writing the informal report for the Collector but I include a few links below whilst the topics are fresh in our minds.

On Saturday afternoon we watched The Yellow Box (poignant Facetti; this linked version is abridged); it was followed by a talk from Jon Appleton (nostalgic Puffinalia). The afternoon was wrapped up with a surprise performance by Adrian Wright with a stunning rendition of The Song of a Wood Nymph (a Lady and her Gamekeeper maybe!).

Looking around at Exhibitions that might interest members I note that the Suffolk Archives will be hosting Picture Books for All which looks at the printers W S Cowell Ltd who were involved with the copies of the early Puffin Picture Books. They worked with artists and illustrators including Kathleen Hale, Edward Ardizzone and Eric Ravilious. The exhibition opens on 21 October 2022.

Talking of Ravilious, the Towner Gallery has an ongoing display of his works which is always worth a visit. Currently there is also an exhibition Cruising the Collection which includes work by Edward Burra (PMP) and John Minton (various covers including the Elizabeth David cookery books).

The Ladybird Artists Exhibition is still touring and although it has closed at Birkenhead it will be at the Braintree Museum from mid November for six months.

Turning from exhibitions, I hear that Henry Eliot has a new book entitled Eliot's Book of Bookish Lists. This sounds like a good Christmas present for any bookworm or collector of lists (and I suspect those two sets might combine more often than not). Available from your local independent bookshop or at hive.co.uk.

Henry's latest series of On the Road with Penguin Classics is also available on whichever podcast platform you use. The first went out on 29 September featuring Will Self talking about Thomas de Quincey and William S Burroughs. The link shows you the episodes currently available (including Season 2) along with the Season 3 Trailer.

I note that the House of Illustration is on the move. Planned reopening is in 2024 in an intriguing new location.
