The Society holds regular study days on matters relating to the history and design of Penguin Books. The most recent was on Saturday 24 March 2007 at the V&A lecture theatre. The theme of the 2007 event was Book Illustration.
Previous to that, the 2005 study day, Penguin by Designers, featured five former and the current, Penguin art directors. Each of these had a long, and often exclusive relationship with Penguin.
It is a different story with illustrators, who are invariably freelance, and will work for any publisher – indeed any client – and therefore do not produce work exclusively for Penguin. For this reason, therefore, although there was a Penguin connection – all speakers produced either regular or iconic covers and illustration for Penguin – their talks, and the day itself was not confined to Penguin Books, but looked at their work in the context of a changing marketplace, and developing technology.
The programme for the day was as follows:

The 2005 study day has now been published in book form: see our publications page. We plan to create a permanent record of the 2007 day in much the same way. If you would be interested in buying a copy of this book when it is published please register your interest with Steve Hare (steve.hare@btinternet.com).
