A Study Day in conjunction with the V&A display “70 Years of Penguin Design”

For the first 20 years Penguin books were instantly recognisable: typographical covers in various colours on a three-band horizontal grid. From the mid 1950s steps were taken to introduce a succession of cover grids to incorporate illustration.

This Study Day brings together a number of key figures in those developments and the makers of the modern Penguin look:

John Miles (Penguin typographer 1954-1958,and co- founder of the design partnership Banks & Miles)
Romek Marber (freelance Penguin designer of books and the revised grid for Crime titles, 1961-1968)
Derek Birdsall (freelance Penguin designer chiefly associated with Penguin Education and Pelican, 1960s-1970s)
Jerry Cinamon (freelance designer for Pelican History of Art and the ‘Style and Civilization’ series, 1960s-1980s)
Jim Stoddart (current Penguin Art Director, Penguin Press)
David Pelham (art director and designer, 1960s-1970s)
