January Wrap-up; Whats On and What to Watch For
We always hope to alert Members to Exhibitions that might be of interest. Wherever possible you will hear about them through The Collector, but sometimes they come up between publication dates or slip through the net. Our Editor is always pleased to receive information from Members - or to hear if you have visited an exhibition and think it is worth nudging the rest of us!
We have recently heard from a member who visited the Designs on Britain exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London:
"Today ... I visited the Jewish Museum in Camden Town to see the exhibition Designs on Britain which featured the (mainly graphic) design work of 18 Jewish emigres. Of particular interest to Penguin Collectors is that three of them are Hans Schleger, Hans Schmoller and Romek Marber with full credit given to their work for Penguin Books. (There was for example a good display of Marber's crime books.)"

I have also heard good reports of the two Exhibitions currently running at the Ditchling Museum of Art+Craft - Elizabeth Friedlander and 20 Years of Penguin Essentials.

Tied in with the Ditchling Exhibitions, on 8 March there will be a lecture Coralie Bickford-Smith: In Conversation with John Hamilton, Art Director at Penguin Books.

House of Illustration is currently showcasing Quentin Blake's collaboration with author John Yeoman John Yeoman and Quentin Blake; 50 Years of Childrens Books. Whilst Blake is very well known for his work with Roald Dahl, it is perhaps surprising to discover that he created more books with Yeoman than he did with any other author.

Future dates for your diary include a lot of Bawden!
Bawden at Home (1 April - 24 October) at the Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden. The Gallery has an excellent permanent collection containing works by Edward Bawden (and other members of his family) but it might be especially worth a visit during this period.

Tickets will be released shortly for another Bawden must see, this time at Dulwich Picture Gallery (23 May - 9 September).

If you missed it at Eastbourne last year, you are strongly recommended to visit Compton Verney Art Gallery which will be home to an exhibition entitled Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship. English Artist Designers 1922-1942 (17 March - 10 Jun).

It is also good to hear about new books that are on the horizon. There are, of course, our own publications (and the next Collector is already shaping up to be an excellent read!) but other titles that might interest include the Mainstone Press "Are you Sitting Comfortably? The Book Jackets of Edward Bawden" (yes, him again) which now has a publication date of February 2018 - but it has been promised for some time so we will keep our fingers crossed!
Recommendations of places to visit or articles to read are also very welcome - whether bookshops in out of the way places, museums that have surprised you by having items of Penguin related interest, or articles that you have stumbled across (preferably open access).
