Exhibitions at Ditchling

Two exhibitions that are surely on Members' wish lists in one place! Between 6 January and 29 April the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft is home to an exhibition featuring Elizabeth Friedlander and her relationship with Penguin. Alongside this is a display entitled 20 Years of Penguin Essentials which looks at a series that began in 1998.

Elizabeth Friedlander's work is probably best known for her Penguin covers (particularly the Scores) but this is just the tip of the iceberg as this Exhibition clearly shows. Born in Germany, Elizabeth Friedlander was forced to leave in the 30s. She settled in Italy where, once again, she was made unwelcome. Finally, in 1939 she arrived in England where, for the third time, she carved out a successful career.

Further reading:
Elizabeth Friedlander and Penguin by Pauline Paucker (an extract from Paucker's "New Borders: The Working Life of Elizabeth Friedlander) was published in Collector 51.
A four page illustrated article Elizabeth Friedlander by Graham Moss appears in Collector 67.
