“A club for the nicest bunch of nutters”

Godfrey Smith died on 22 December at the age of 91. He was a larger-than-life man, President of the Oxford Union between Robin Day and Jeremy Thorpe, and the second Editor of the Sunday Times Magazine. He took over from Mark Boxer in 1965 and raised the Magazine to peaks of journalistic and photographic excellence.

The Society had a soft spot for him when, in February 1982, he wrote about it in the Sunday Times and no fewer than 107 new members joined. His memorable description takes a lot of the credit for this surge: “a club for the nicest bunch of nutters”.
